SAT Preparation

Mrs. Greene had emailed me a link to Khan Academy’s Official SAT Practice Site, which is sponsored by the College Board and also describes the changes in the newly redesigned SAT.  This site allows students to practice anytime and anywhere at no cost by providing four practice tests plus it provides study and test-taking tips.
My blended learning project is to have students use their Chromebooks to help in SAT preparation. This can be done using several different software packages, including Study Island and the Plato Learning Environment in addition to site like Khan Academy and the College Board.
I decided to try out both a Math and an English practice test. This brought back memories of my own high school days when I took these tests for real.  I am sure that it is not surprising to most of you that I had done much better on the Math SAT than on the English SAT.
So, taking the Math SAT on the Khan Academy site was much more comfortable for me than taking the English SAT.  One important concept for our students to be aware of is that they still need to use paper and pencil to calculate the answers on the Math SAT.  Somehow, I sense that they feel that is not important.

For the English SAT, I was not as comfortable reading a passage on the screen, and then answering the questions below the passage.  I think I would still prefer a printed copy to read and highlight.  But, I sense that today’s students are more comfortable in using technology in this way.

  1. Laura, I too tried out Khan Academy's SAT test, but I stuck to my comfort zone of English. I am intrigued by the promise of this program's use of a pre-assessment to tailor a learning path for individuals. SAT practice can often miss the mark of where students actually are in their preparation, but this program may just take the guessing out of the process.
